When Escalation came out in 2019, the professional analysis of war pointed to the future looking much like the Russian takeover of Crimea in 2014. Even in the Kremlin, where “hybrid warfare’s” supposed prophet, Valery Gerasimov, worked, it appeared to be the way forward. War conducted primarily by proxies, “Little Green Men,” and information operations.
Even at the time, however, the term faced some pushback from serious analysts, especially as the “Gerasimov Doctrine” narrative faced some difficulty since Gerasimov was, in fact, accusing the United States and the West of waging this “hybrid warfare” on Russia and its allies. Many of these analysts had the same problem with the model as there is with the “Generational Model of War,” in that many of these factors have always existed and will continue to be employed alongside other means of warfare.
